"For millions, not for millionaires." That's how Volkswagen aims to position its first-ever all-electric crossover, the ID.4. The second model built on VW's new MEB platform (after the ID.3 hatchback) and the first electric-only Volkswagen to launch in the U.S., the ID.4 promises the driving dynamics of a GTI and the practical utility of a Tiguan while serving the purpose of the Beetle. Just as the iconic Beetle brought affordable automobility to the mass market, Volkswagen seeks to do the same for electric vehicles with the ID.4.
Volkswagen is no stranger to the world of electric vehicles, having sold the e-Golf hatchback from 2015 to 2019. But the ID. (Intelligent Design)-series aims to bring electric automobility in-line with standard combustion offering by providing spacious and intuitive interiors, responsive performance, and practical range. The ID.4 launches in the industry's most competitive market, the compact crossover segment, and Volkswagen already has several more ID models in the pipeline, including the ID.5 SUV, ID.7 van, and an ID.5 sedan and station wagon.
Expected to go on sale this Spring, the 2021 ID.4 is available for pre-order through Ourisman Volkswagen of Bethesda. Here's a quick overview of some of the 2021 ID.4's key attributes:
- At launch, the 2021 VW ID.4 will equip an 82-kWh lithium-ion battery pack powering a rear-axle electric motor rated at 201 horsepower and 228 pound-feet of torque. A 302-horsepower, two-motor all-wheel-drive model we become available later in 2021.
- The 1st Edition ID.4 has a manufacturer-estimated range of 250 miles, just under what the average American drives in a week. With a Level 2 charger, like those found at home in or in public parking lots, the ID.4 can add about 33 miles of range per hour, and fully recharge in about 7.5 hours. DC fast chargers, like those found at highway rest stops, can fill the batter from 5 to 80 percent in just 40 minutes.
- 2021 ID.4 owners will benefit from three-years of complimentary unlimited charging on the Electrify America network, covering more than 470 charging stations and 2,000 public DC fast chargers across the country.
- Since electric powertrains occupy less space, the ID.4 offers an impressively airy cabin with plenty of headroom and legroom for passengers in any of the outboard seats. Behind the rear seats, the ID.4 reserves 30.3 cubic feet for your luggage or groceries. And when you need to prioritize even more cargo capacity, the 40/20/40 second-row folds down to offer up to 64.2 cubic feet.
- It's fair to expect a leading-edge electric vehicle to come loaded with advanced technologies, and the 2021 ID.4 doesn't disappoint. Standard features include a 10-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, USB-C ports, and advanced driver aids like adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, automatic high beams, lane-keeping, and more.
