Volkswagen isn't new to the world of electric vehicles, having produced the e-Golf hatchback from 2015 to 2019. But with its new ID series (Intelligent Design), the company looks to bring electric vehicles in line with standard combustion offerings by making emissions-free automobility more readily accessible to a broader range of shoppers. The first US-bound vehicle in the lineup, the ID.4 compact crossover, enters the industry's most competitive segment with a spacious and intuitive high-tech interior, responsive performance, and a practical range. The ID.4 is available for pre-order now, and you can claim yours through Ourisman Volkswagen of Bethesda. Here's a quick look at some of its most notable attributes.

  • Plentiful Power: The 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 finds its motivation in a rear-axle-mounted electric motor that generates 201 horsepower and 228 pound-feet of instantly available torque. An all-wheel-drive, two-motor version with 302-horsepower will be available later in the year.

  • Practical Range: The first-edition ID.4 boasts a manufacturer-estimated 250 miles of all-electric range on one charge, or about what the average American drives in a week. But you don't have to wait a week to charge. With a standard Level 2 charger, like those found in homes or public parking lots, the ID.4 can add around 33 miles of range per hour, fully recharging overnight in 7.5 hours. And with a DC fast charger, like those at highway rest stops, you can fill the battery from 5 to 80 percent in just 40 minutes.

  • Roomy accommodations: Since the VW ID.4's electric powertrain takes up less space than a traditional powertrain, it can offer an impressively open cabin with spacious seating for up to five people and 30.3 cubic feet to spare for cargo behind the second row. And with the 40/20/40 rear seats folded, you'll have up to 64.2 cubic feet of max cargo space.

  • Advanced Tech: It's only natural that a leading-edge electric vehicle would come loaded with cutting-edge tech. The VW ID.4 comes standard with a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, USB-C ports, and advanced driver-assistance features like adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, automatic high beams, lane-keeping assist, and more.
